In 1887, he along with his nephew, Ollin Oxendine, and Isaac Braboy were elected by the four trustees that had been chosen by the North Carolina General Assembly (his brother, James "Big Jim" Oxendine, along with Rev. W. L. Moore, Preston Locklear, and James E. Dial, Sr.) to become the first Board of Trustees for the Croatan Indian Normal School, currently known as the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
