Son of Ebenezer Whitney and Annis "Annie" Kingsbury, husband of Lucinda Brown, whom he married on January 1, 1844 in Mansfield, Tolland, Connecticut.

Second husband of Eliza Ann Hunter, widow of George Valentine Robinson, whom he married on February 28, 1867 in Manhattan, New York, and father of George Henry Whitney.

He was a Superintendent at the Boys Lodging House in Brooklyn, New York for years and a Music Teacher while Eliza was the Matron of the Home.

In 1850, Ebenezer Whitney, aged 32, born in Massachusetts, a blacksmith, was living in New Britain, Hartford, Connecticut, with his wife, Lucinda B. Whitney, aged 25, born in Connecticut, and widowed mother, Anice Whitney, aged 59, born in Massachusetts.

In 1860, Ebenezer Whitney, aged 42, born in Massachusetts, was a steward at the Providence Reform School, Providence Rhode Island.

On February 28, 1867, Ebenezer Whitney, aged 48, widowed, born about 1819 in Millbury, Massachusetts, the son of Ebenezer Whitney and Anni Kingsbury, married Eliza Hunter Robinson, aged 42, widowed, born about 1825 in Cookstown, County Tyrone, Ireland, the daughter of Isaac Hunter and Martha Glenn, at Manhattan, New York.

In 1870, Ebenezer Whitney, aged 52, Superintendent of a Boys Lodging House, and his wife, Eliza Whitney, aged 45, Matron of a Boys Lodging House, were living at the News Boys Lodging House, Brooklyn, New York, with Matilda Robinson, aged 24, a school teacher, Benjamin Murray, aged 25, a boot black, John Burke, aged 12, who worked in a tobacco factory, Thomas Rall, aged 16, who worked in a tobacco factory, William Wallace, aged 16, a printer's apprentice, William Boyd, aged 12, who worked for a baker, William Miller, aged 15, no occupation given, and 35 others, all under the age of 20, and Bridget Bolau, aged 35.

In 1880, Ebenezer Whitney, aged 62, born in Massachusetts, no occupation, was living in Brookhaven, New York, with his wife, Eliza Whitney, aged 58. Both of his parents, were born in Massachusetts, and both of hers in Ireland.

In 1900, Ebenezer Whitney, aged 82, a retired music teacher, was living at 157A Madison Street, Brooklyn, New York, with his wife, Eliza A. Whitney, aged 78, stepdaughters, Matilda Robinson, aged 51, a school teacher, and Sarah Robinson, aged 53, and lodgers, Edward Mackintosh, aged 45, and Oliver (Nina) Knudson, aged 26.
