Workman Brings Ancient Names and Dates to Light Again

This is a feature story which has that rare quality of originality. We’ll wager you never saw one like it in this or any other paper.

Chester Lawton is responsible for it. While employed by the Whitewater Cemetery Association he was amazed at the number of graves in both cemeteries that were without headstones. He investigated to find that stones, in most cases were there but had fallen and the years had covered them over with as much as six inches of earth.

Chester made it his business to dig them out. The count I believe is 155. It was a long job but he has finished it. As the stones were unearthed he took down the name, date of birth and date of death.

Below we print the list he supplied us. Many of the names will mean nothing to the oldest of our Old Timers. How do you account for the burial in Oak Grove cemetery of Mary Scoville, who was born in 1814 and died in 1816, twenty years before Whitewater’s pioneers arrived? And how come Johnny Buening whose death occurred in 1807?

The chances are excellent that most of you won’t know anything about the many who have slept so long, but we believ[e] you are going to look over the names anyway.
