Severn Parks twice enlisted during the Civil War but spent very little time on active duty.
1. Enlisted with his brother, Stephen Henry Parks, in September 1861, and mustered the following month in Harrisburg as a private with Co. F, 53rd Pennsylvania Infantry. Severn fell ill with "chronic rheumatism" and received a discharge by surgeon's certificate after barely a month in the army, never even leaving Harrisburg's Camp Curtin. He is not found in the company register.

Enlisted in Bloomsburg, Columbia County, June 9, 1865, as a substitute for Exaviour Echard Smith (for which Severn received up to $300 from Mr. Smith), mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. A, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry. Oddly, he borrowed his brother and father's name and enlisted as "Stephen L. Parks." Again, he spent much of his time hospitalized and was discharged by surgeon's certificate to date May 26, 1865, from Satterlee U.S. Hospital in Philadelphia.
He married Eura Jane Kitchen in 1865 in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, and fathered Robert E. (b. 12/10/75), Mary Jane (married Arthur Deary), and Eveline (married John Dullard). Eura Jane died September 10, 1886, and he then married twice-widowed Elizabeth Nelson, née Rollins, November 6, 1902, in Clay County, Minnesota. Although Severn died in Haxby, his stepdaughter, a resident of Brandenburg, buried him in her home county.
