SHAFFNER, Ruth Lewis Webb, 96, of Blacksburg, died Saturday, October 7, 2000, in the Meadowbrook Nursing Home following a brief illness. She was born in Pulaski County on April 13, 1904, to the late George and Laura Quesenberry Lewis.
After more than 20 years of military service, she retired from the United States Air Force, Strategic Air Command Headquarters, Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, on September 1, 1963, attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant. She was a member of the Colemanville United Methodist Church in Conestoga, Pennsylvania and the Doctor Harvey Black Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy. Until recently, she resided at the Brethren Village in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Velma Lewis Wilburn and Opal Lewis Quesenberry; and one brother, Mavin Lewis. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Zana and Francis Albert of McCoy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kelly and Martha Webb of Concord, and Willis and Virginia Webb of Christiansburg; two sisters and brother-in-law, Elsa Richardson of Sylvatus, and Earlene and Russ Reece of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; two brothers and sister-in-law, Jack Lewis of Sylvatus, and Fred and Rita Lewis of Hampton; 12 grandchildren, Lenwood McCoy and Julia M. Graham of Blacksburg, Melissa M. Wohlford of Marietta, Ga., Gayle W. Butler of Tampa, Fla., Michael Webb of Concord, Marshall Webb of Portsmouth, Matthew Webb of Gladys, Cheryl W. Farmer of Grantville, Ga., Mark Webb of Christiansburg, Karen W. Moore of Standardsville, Kathy W. Worthen of Manassas, Laura W. Summner of Bumpass; 21 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, October 10, 2000, at 11 a.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, Blacksburg with Mr. Bobby E. Fuller officiating. The interment will be held at 4 p.m. in the New Concord Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Concord, Va. The family will receive friends Monday, October 9, 2000, from 6 to 8 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.
