Fred G. Lewis, 87, died on Nov. 14, 2011 at his home in Hampton, Va. He lived a long, productive life, helping countless others with his technical knowledge, good common sense and tireless work ethic. Born and raised in Sylvatus, Va., Fred enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during WWII, participating in the Battle of the Atlantic and the CBI Theater where, in India, he met his future wife, Rita. During the war, he was trained in underwater demolition and ran a power plant on the island of Kwajalein from which atomic bomb tests were launched. After WWII, Fred attended Roanoke College and The Newport News Shipyard and Dry Dock Company Apprentice School. He retired from the shipyard after 43 years of service as an engineer, which included work on nuclear propulsion for the U.S.S. Enterprise, the first nuclear powered aircraft carrier.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, G.W. and Laura Lewis; and siblings, Ruth Shaffner, Velma Wilburn, Opal Quesenberry, Elsa Richardson, Mavan Lewis, and Earlyne Reece.
He is survived by his brother, Jack Lewis of Hillsville, Va.; wife, Rita Lewis of Hampton; son, Fred Lewis II (Rosie) of Martinsville, Va.; daughters, Gail Lewis (Jay) of Raleigh, N.C., and Laura Lewis Kovac (Paul) of Chardon, Ohio; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held Nov. 25, in Sylvatus, Va.
