Amanda Culver was born on August 6, 1827 to Darius and Mary Heath Culver. Amanda and her six brothers and sisters were born into a tightly knit family in which cousins intermarried for several generations.

When Amanda was seven years old her father died. Leaving her mother to raise her large young family by herself. In March of 1845, Mary Heath Culver married for a second time to Thomas Martin Lee. Following their marriage, Mary, well into her 40's, gave birth to her seventh child, John William Lee.

In 1852, Amanda married a cousin, Calvin Schuyler. Three years later Amanda's brother, Horace, was widowed. At this time, Amanda took charge of Horace's two year old daughter, Monira also known as Minnie. Amanda and Minnie would maintain a mother and daughter relationship throughout their lives. It is now unclear if Minnie's true parentage was common knowledge in the following generation of Culvers.

On May 7, 1860, Calvin Schuyler died. At the time, Amanda was three months pregnant with their only child, Ida Florence. Ida was born in January of 1861

Amanda's younger sister, Mary was married to William Westover, a native of Berkshire, Mass. Profitting handsomely from the sale of Canadian lumber to cities on the East coast of the United States, the Westover family had created a lucrative manfacturing business. Four months after the birth of her daughter, Amanda married William's older brother, Luther on May 30, 1861. Following the marriage, Minnie and Ida took the surname of Westover.

1865 marked the arrival of the Westover family in Bay City, Michigan. Luther established the firm of Smith, Westover & Co, which specialized in the aquisition of land to be harvested for lumber. Two years later, Luther branched into the field of local banking.

In 1875, Amanda's foster daughter, Minnie, married Wellington Carpenter of Ontario. Two years later, Minnie gave birth to a son named Luther Claredon Carpenter. Minnie and Baby Luther were visiting Amanda in the Fall of 1878, when Minnie died of Consumption. She was only 25 years of age, her baby was 14 months old.

Minnie's son remained with Amanda until she passed away twelve years later.
