Mary began life during the dawn of the 19th century on November 4, 1803 in Simcoe, Ontario, where she was born to John Heath and Anna Soveriegn Heath. On her 21st birthday she married Darius Culver. The Culvers were one of the founding families of Norfolk, Ontario. Incredibly tight knit, it was common for Culver cousins to marry their first and second cousins. Mary's maternal grandmother was named Lavina Culver.
Mary and Darius's eleven year marriage produced six children. Angeline, Amanda, Horace, Harriet. Leman, and Mary. Mary was widowed on March 12, 1845. She raised her young family alone for nine years until March 12, 1845 when she married Thoma Martin Lee, an Englishman fourteen years her junior. A year later on November 25, 1846, Mary gave birth to her seventh child at the age of 43. John William Lee would be her last child.
Mary and Thomas spent a whopping 41 years together until Thomas's death in 1886. Mary moved to Bay City following his passing. Her adult children had relocated to Michigan over the course of twenty years to pursue their fortunes in lumber manufacturing and banking.
