He ended up becoming a pioneer for Yolo County, as he set up and ran a successful farm when he moved his famiy west in the early 1860s. Mary died in 1868.

Henry worked for Mark Hopkins, railroad tycoon, supplying fruit to him from his farm. It is where he met Hopkins' maid, Catherine. They married on May 2, 1869. To them, they had four children, H.F. marston, Frances Collins, Nellie Marston Nelk, and John Joseph Marston.

By 1880, Henry had successfully acheived the "Californian Dream." His farm was assessed to be valued at $16,000, and not to mention he was the step-father of Timothy Nolan Hopkins, founder of Palo Alto and heir of Mark Hopkins. Not to bad for a man who didn't know how to read or write.

He died on January 5, 1894 at the age of 64, after suffering brain hemmoraging, a stroke.

Forever in our hearts. Rest in peace Grandpa.
