James age of 60 was mis-reported on his death certificate (should have been 70) and then used as the basis of his age on his cemetery headstone. All of his siblings had predeased him except for his sister Anna who lived in Sacramento and was estranged from the Yolo County Marston family. Thus the reporting of James death fell upon junior members of the family who may not have known James true age.
That he was born in 1857 is supported by the Yolo County census records of 1860, 1870 and 1910 and the Colusa County census of 1880. In addition, the Yolo County Voter Registration list states that he was 22 years of age in 1879.
