She was born on Oct. 15, 1933 in Kanawha to Henry and Helen Kudej Severson. She was raised and received her education in Kanawha. Mrs. Benson was a 1953 graduate of the Iowa State Teacher's College (UNI). She taught at Cresco from 1953 to 1954.
On Aug. 22, 1954 she married Claire Barrett in Kanawha. From 1954 until 1960 she taught in the Marshalltown Community School System and from 1961 until 1971 she taught at the Barbies Preschool. Her first husband preceded her in death in 1962.
On June 12, 1973 she married Donald M. Benson in Marshalltown. She worked at HyVee food stores for the last 15 years as a customer service clerk. She was a member of the Hope United Methodist Church and the Women of the Moose Lodge #313.
Survivors include her husband, Donald of Marshalltown; two sons, both of Marshalltown; one stepson, of Marshalltown; one step-daughter, of Marshalltown; her mother, Helen Severson of Garner; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers. She was preceded in death by her father and first husband.
