Story from a direct descendent.
Joe's mohter died when he was 9 years old, and he resented being bossed by older brothers and sisters, so he left home when he was very young. He traveled around, riding railroad box cars. He worked in Washington and Oregon in the timber cutting business. He worked in the Colorado coal mines and worked on the construction of the Colorado State Capital building in Denver before marrying Phoebe Ann Wilson in 1889.
After their marriage he farmed for himself and did custom thrashing. He was an excellent stone mason, (he laid the stone for the Logan Opera House), carpenter, and loved to whittle and play cards. He was always whittling a toy or a puzzle for a grandchild. He had a good sense of humor.
