Richard W. Teagle

Newport News - Richard W. Teagle departed this life on Feb. 13, 1998, to be with the Lord, after an extended illness at the Riverside Convalescent Center. He was born in Gloucester County on Oct. 17, 1926.

Dick Teagle was an outstanding community and business leader. He founded Teagle Realty in 1964 and was an innovator in real estate on the Peninsula.

His company was the first to introduce multiple offices, totaling nine offices with more than 150 agents, and to establish a training program for agents.

With his vision, he was the first real estate broker to develop the "one stop" real estate company, offering his clients a mortgage lender, law firm, insurance agency, and surveyor within the same building. He brought the first homes photo publication to the Peninsula exclusively for his company, which was known as the Homes for Living Network.
His company also offered a home trade-in and guaranteed home sales program to his clients. In addition, he built many homes on the Peninsula with his residential construction companies, Truhart Inc. and Teagle Custom Homes Inc. Woodland Farms and Normandy Forest Subdivisions were developed by Teagle.

Dick Teagle was a member of the Virginia Peninsula Association of Realtors, the Virginia Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors.
With over four decades in the real estate industry, he held professional designations of GRI and CRB. He was a recipient of numerous awards, including Realtor of the Year 1997, President of the Virginia Peninsula Association of Realtors in 1978, and the VPAR Realtors Life Member Award.

He was a member of the Board of Directors for many years, and has held every elective office available in the Board. Dick Teagle was the moving force for the construction and relocation of the existing Board of Realtors building. He was also instrumental for establishing the Annual Realtors Outstanding Salesmanship Awards. He was a founding member of the Peninsula Sales and Marketing Executives Club.

Dick Teagle was a member of and devoted to the Peninsula Kiwanis Club. He had 34 years of perfect attendance, served as Past President, helped to establish the Key Club at Ferguson High School and was the primary sponsor for many years.

He received Outstanding Kiwanian of the Year numerous times, and was the recipient of the Thirty Year Legion of Honor Award. In addition, he was Chairman of the Kiwanis Scholarship Foundation and was the primary fund raiser of the Foundation. The Foundation gives scholarships to deserving students to assist with college tuition costs.
Dick Teagle was the driving force for the development of Youth Challenge. "An angel in disguise" were words used to describe his generosity. He had a strong faith in the program and gave tremendous support. Representatives at the Youth Challenge had stated that many lives have been blessed because of Dick Teagle, and that their existence is derived from his support.

Dick Teagle also had an active role in the support of the Boy Scouts of America.

Dick Teagle was noted for his fundraising ability for charities and individuals in need. He personally helped many individuals become homeowners and strongly believed in giving back to his community. Dick and his generosity will be sorely missed by the people who knew him, his family, and many friends and associates who loved and admired him.
Dick Teagle served in the U.S. Army in the World War II and the Korean War.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Newport News. He is survived by Stuart H. Teagle, and his beloved sons, Richard W. "Dicky" Teagle II of Newport News and Hartsell Teagle, and wife, Sharon Jewell, of California; his daughter and son-in-law, Trudy and Randy Teagle-Smith of Columbia, Md.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and his brothers, Ellis W. Teagle of Newport News and Raymond Teagle of Williamsburg. He was predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth T. Satterfield, his brother, Fred Teagle, and his mother and father, Gladys and Zach Teagle.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Peninsula Funeral Home by the Rev. Jerry Helms. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 6 to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Peninsula Kiwanis Club Foundation.
