Mrs. Lydia M. Smith, wife of Merry W. Smith, of Burton, died a few days since, in the 79th year of her age. She was born in Bedford county, Virginia, December 21, 1799, but left there with her husband and children in 1833, coming to Illinois and settling in Shelby county.

They afterwards moved to Missouri, and finally went to Burton, in this county, in 1840, where they have resided ever since. Mrs. Smith was a lady highly respected by a large circle of friends and acquaintances.

A member of the Christian church for years, she has done much for the cause of religion, and was always foremost in charities and good deeds where she lived. For a number of years she had been quite ill, but her affliction did not prevent her from manifesting that cheerful disposition for which she was beloved by so many.

She was the mother of the Hon. J. M. Smith, and Merry W. Smith of this city.
