After high school, he worked briefly in the anthracite coal mines then moved to Middletown, PA, Hummelstown, PA, Hershey, PA, Fairless Hills, PA, Lansdale, PA and finally Norfolk, VA. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1942-1946 and was honorably discharged. Through self-study, he became an invaluable resource to his family and friends on such diverse topics as gardening, income taxes, real estate, and the stock market. An enthusiastic home cook, he made periodic blue crab feasts a family tradition for decades.
