Mattie's mother Elizabeth Ann Haddox was the daughter of William Haddox and Nancy Ann Vineyard, natives of Tennessee. They moved to Houston County, Texas from Knox County, Tennessee after the birth of their youngest child. Her father James Bartee was born in Georgia.
