Anna was the second wife of John James Smurl. She married John in 1898, as he was newly widowed and had four young children to take care of. She was a Catholic and this religious preference encouraged the conversion of the family from their previously held Presbryterian beliefs. They had two children, Mary (1900-1966) and Annie (1901-1918).

Her father was Patrick Higgins and her mother was Ellen Gillespie. She had a sister Ellen and another close relative Patrick who came to America and lived with Annie for a time.
