Harriet "Hattie" Fost was born July 23, 1876 near Peabody, Kansas, to Francis T. and Elmira Fisher Fost. She graduated from Peabody High School in 1897. She was organist at the Baptist church and it was there she met a young farmer, Harvey Stutsman. They were married Nov. 23, 1898. They lived in Peabody for several years. In 1901 they move to Colorado Springs for Hattie's health. She suffered from consumption.

In 1903 Hattie and Harvey had a child, Lucretia Isabelle Stutsman. Then came tragedy. Hattie died March 22, 1905 in Colorado, of consumption. Her body was returned to Peabody for burial. She is buried with her parents, and brothers Andrew and Benjamin Fost. Benjamin died of consumption as well and Hattie's mother may have suffered from it.

Hattie's daughter, Isabelle, also had a short life. Isabelle died in 1922 at age 21 in an auto accident. Hattie's husband, Harvey, died in 1952. They are buried in Winton Cemetery, Merced County, California, where they moved after Hattie's death.
