Arrie was the 2nd child born to Francis Eugene Franklin and Laura ( Ida Laura) Kirkpatrick. She was born March 1889 in Louisiana, according to 1900 census. Her brothers were Ernest Eugene, Dosier Reid, Claude Clinton and Noel Lester Franklin.
Arrie's mother died in 1899 when Arrie was around 10 years old. Her father remarried August 1901 to a widow named Mrs. Lizzie Neal Phennel whose maiden name was Lizzie Neal Skipper. Lizzie Neal Skipper had one brother named James William (Jim or Jimmy) Skipper. Now we get to the interesting part. Jimmy Skipper fell for this little blue eyed beauty and married her January 16th 1906.
Roy Everett Skipper, my grandfather, was born November 13, 1906 in Ringgold, Bienville Parish Louisiana. My grandfather has no memory of his mother. According to my father and Uncle Bill, Arrie and Jimmy promised never to remarry if one should perish. Upon reflection, I see the young couple perhaps making unrealistic promises but Jimmy never remarried. He moved Roy into the house with his parents, William James M Skipper and Martha A Lucas Skipper. "Maw and Paw" Skipper cared for them until Roy married Ada Beatrice Waites 1926. The newly weds lived with and cared for Maw, Paw and Jimmy Skipper while rearing their family. Paw Skipper died from pneumonia in 1938 and is buried at Rocky Mount Cemetery, Ringgold Bienville Parish, La. Maw Skipper died in 1941 and is buried at Rocky Mount.
Arrie and Jimmy Skipper are buried at Springhill Cemetery, located just a few miles from Rocky Mount. I wondered why they weren't in the same location until I discovered another infant Skipper buried there. This child was the infant of William J and Martha A Skipper, which would be a sibling of Jimmy Skipper.
Naturally, I do not have all the answers. What I do know, my grandfather always spoke of the mother he never knew with such tenderness and longing. Her portrait was passed down to Granddad and he treasured it above all his possessions.
I would love to know more about her.
