Published Obituary- Queen Anne's Record Observer, Thursday, September 3rd, 1942
Mrs. Emma Josephine Benton, died at her home near Matapeake on the evening of August 29th after a life covering almost 80 years. After development of a heart condition, three weeks prior to her death, Mrs. Benton succumbed, surrounded by relatives and friends with whom she had lived and worked since 3 years of age.

Born in Whitman, Maryland, November 3, 1862, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Cummings, she was married to Franklin D. Benton at Chester, Pa. in 1882.

She is survived by her children: Kirby Benton and Mrs. Rosie Porter, Stevensville, Edgar Benton, Grasonville and Franklin Benton, Baltimore. Also by one brother, Wesley Gardner, Baltimore and Mrs. Lillie Thompson, Chester, Pa., sister. Also to mourn her death are 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held August 31 at from the Stevensville Methodist Church, where she had been a member, by the Rev. Robert F. Loss, pastor. Interment followed in the Stevensville Cemetery.

The pallbearers were: Lemuel Thompson, Louis Jones, Dudley Sparks, L. Roland Carville, Hugh Harris and Benton Gardner.
