Henry DeWitt, s. of John and Hattie DeWitt, b. Dec. 14, 1811 at Somerville, New Jersey.

On Sept. 10, 1845 of record at Mansfield, Conn., Henry, called only as "Mr. DeWitt" in the marriage entry, m. Elizabeth Jane Griggs, eldest child of Austin Griggs and Orilla Dimock, b. of record Sept. 29, 1826 at Tolland, Conn.

Shortly after marriage the Dewitts relocated to Milford Township, Pike County, Pennsylvania in the northeast part of the state along the upper reaches of the Delaware River. Prior to 1850 several of Elizabeth's siblings and cousins also relocated from adjoining Coventry and Mansfield, Conn. to Pike County. There Henry is listed as a miller in the 1850 census. At least the six eldest children were b. at or near Milford before the family relocated first to Knox then to Marion County in northeast Missouri. Alice, the 7th child, b. in July 1858, is consistently stated in all censuses and her own death certificate as the first of the children b. at Missouri.

Henry Dewitt, father of eleven children, d. Jan. 21, 1885 at Palmyra, Missouri (g.s.) and his wide Elizabeth d. at Palmyra Aug. 6, 1886 (g.s.). Their children, the first six b. at or near Milford, Penn., were:

• i. Orilla DeWitt, named after her maternal grandmother, b. Nov. 16, 1846, d. July 31, 1897 at Saint Joseph, Missouri while hospitalized for infection from a horse bite; m. Dec. 16, 1873 at Edina, MO as his 1st wife, Whitmer A. Thomas. There were no children of the marriage.

• ii. George W. Dewitt, b. circa 1848; appears in the 1850 census but no other census thereafter and is presumed to have d. young.

• iii. Cornelia Dewitt, b. in Apr. 1850; appears as a one month old named child in the 1850 census but no other census thereafter and is presumed to have d. young.

• iv. Catherine "Kate" Maria Dewitt, b. Oct. 7, 1852, d. Sept. 5, 1951 at Kansas City, MO (g.s.); m. June 9, 1870 at Palmyra, MO, Richard Key, who d. Feb. 12, 1910 (g.s.) Five children of the family, four named between the 1880 and 1900 censuses.

• v. Harriet "Hattie" G. Dewitt, b. Aug. 1854, was living as a childless widow at Moberly, MO in the June 1900 census, but cannot be found thereafter; m. June 9, 1870 at Palmyra, MO, Herman R. Suppe of Moberly, who d. there June 13, 1887 (g.s.) Three children of the family, all dying in infancy.

• vi. William Henry Dewitt, b. Aug. 6, 1856, d. Mar. 5, 1915 at Hannibal, MO (g.s.); m. June 5, 1878 at Palmyra, MO, Annie K. Shropshire, who d. Nov. 18, 1926 at Hannibal (g.s.) Three children of the family.

• vii. Alice Dewitt, b. July 27, 1858, the first of the children b. at Missouri, d. Mar. 7, 1938 at Kansas City, MO (g.s.); m. on an unconfirmed date as his last wife, Thomas Westlake Gilruth, s. of Rev. James Gilruth and Mary Westlake, b. Apr. 6, 1843 at Worthington, OH. An attorney, he purportedly d. Jan. 3, 1921 at Kansas City, MO but there is no Missouri death certificate of record for him. There are no recorded children of the marriage.

• viii. Francis C. "Frankie" Dewitt, b. Mar. 27, 1861, d. in infancy Apr. 7, 1862 (g.s.)

• ix. Austin Dewitt, b. Jan. 14, 1863, d. in infancy July 7, 1864 (g.s.)

• x. Reuben M. Dewitt, b. July 13, 1866, d. unmarried in a railroad accident Aug. 23, 1885 (g.s.)

• xi. Sophia "Sophy" Esther Dewitt, b. Apr. 7, 1868, d. Jan. 2, 1938 at Hannibale, MO (g.s.); m. 1) at the age of 15 at Palmyra, MO with parent consent, Joseph Walley, then of Fort Worth, TX, who d. Oct. 11, 1898 (g.s.) and by whom she had at least three children; m. 2) in 1902 William W. Ellington, a barber at Hannibal, MO where he d. Aug. 23, 1914, by whom she had two children; and 3) before 1920, James H. Ives, by whom she had no children. He d. Mar. 9, 1939.

Through their mother Elizabeth Jane Griggs, all of the above Dewitt children were multiple Mayflower descendants. Elizabeth's father Austin Griggs was a descendant of Richard Warren and her mother Orilla Dimock a descendant of John Howland, both passengers of the 1620 Mayflower passage. In addition, Elizabeth was the writer's ancestral cousin, a shared descendant of George Partridge and Sarah Tracy of Duxbury, Mass., latter whose father Stephen Tracy arrived at Plymouth, Mass. in 1621 aboard the Fortune.
