Elizabeth Jane Griggs, eldest child of Austin Griggs and Orilla Dimock, b. of record Sept. 29, 1826 at Tolland, Conn. She d. Aug. 6, 1886 at Palmyra, Missouri (g.s.).

On Sept. 10, 1845 of record at Mansfield, Conn., Elizabeth m. Henry DeWitt. He d. Jan. 21, 1885 at Palmyra, Missouri (g.s.) An enlarged background of the family, including a summary of their children, is contained in Henry DeWitt's memorial.

Through their mother, all of the subsequent Dewitt children were multiple Mayflower descendants. Elizabeth Jane's father Austin Griggs was a descendant of Richard Warren and her mother Orilla Dimock a descendant of John Howland, both passengers of the 1620 Mayflower passage. In addition, Elizabeth was the writer's ancestral cousin, a shared descendant of George Partridge and Sarah Tracy of Duxbury, Mass., latter whose father Stephen Tracy arrived at Plymouth, Mass. in 1621 aboard the Fortune.
