MAGDALINE LUDWIG

There was great sorrow in the neighborhood of South Stockbridge when it became known that Mrs. Frank Ludwig, Sr., had died, suddenly at her home on Monday evening at ten o'clock. Mrs. Ludwig was in her usual good health on that day and accompanied her neighbor, Mrs. John Schommer, to the village of Stockbridge where they picked strawberries. She returned home about seven o'clock in the evening and being fatigued from the trip and heat she retired at nine o'clock. Shortly after she felt distressed and unable to breathe without effort, where upon she arose and went out on the porch thinking the fresh air might relieve her, but instead of bettering her condition she seemed to grown worse and suddenly passed away. For several years she has been more or less trouble with an internal goiter which possibly had something to do with her untimely death. Her family was with her at the time of her passing and did everything in their power to revive her but to no avail, the spark of life had fled.
Magdelina Roell was born in Germany Feb. 11, 1867 and remained in her native home until 1886, when she came to America to the home of her uncle, the late Lorenz Schmitbauer, in the town of Rantoul, this county. Shortly after coming here she was employed in the home of Conrad Gruber in Rantoul, remaining in his household for two years. She was also employed in the Hotel Chilton for a short period and on May 28th, 1889 she was united in marriage to Frank Ludwig, Sr., at St. Elizabeth's church, Kloten, Rev. Fr. Florian officiating. The located on the farm in South Stockbridge on which she passed away.
Mrs. Ludwig was considered one of the leaders in that community, taking an active part in church work, community work and all neighborly gatherings. She was president of the Christian Mothers' society of St. Elizabeth's congregation, in which she did excellent work and from which she will be sadly missed. She was hospitable in her home, generous to the needy and devoted to the interest of her husband and family.
The funeral was held from St. Elizabeth's church, Rev. Fr. J. H. Huhn celebrating Requiem Mass, with interment in St. Elizabeth's cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, seven sons, Jacob and Fred of Charlestown, Otto, Leo, Andrew, Charles and Edmund of Stockbridge, two of whom Otto and Andrew were the U.S. service, the former serving fourteen months overseas. She also leaves four daughters, Mrs. Alfred Penning, Katie, Leona and Lorine of South Stockbridge, three brothers, Jacob Roell of Chilton town, George and Philip Roell in Germany and one sister, known in the Notre Dame order at Sister M. Prova, at Chicago.
