JOPLIN, MO -- Melinda J. Jones, 86 of Joplin, Mo., formerly of Weir, died at 9:55 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at the Freeman West Hospital at Joplin. She had been in failing health for the past six months.
She was born June 26, 1915, at Scammon, to Corwin Merton and Phoebe Owen Andrews. She was a resident of Weir for most of her life. She attended Weir schools.
She married Walter Vernon Jones in November of 1931 at Clinton, Mo. He preceded her in death in 1990.
She worked as a seamstress for Anshire Garment Factory at Pittsburg for 20 years. She also worked for the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant at Parsons as an explosives operator for three years.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church at Weir. She was a member and past president of the Garment Workers Local Union No. 509.
Survivors include five sons, Walter Thomas Jones, of Keokuk, Iowa, Sam Jones of Cherokee, Jack Jones of Russellville, Ark., Jerry Jones of Reeds Springs, Mo., and Donald V. Jones of Oklahoma; one sister, Katherine McDaniel of Cumberland, Ohio; 28 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Corwin "Corky" Jones, one grandson, Corky Jones Jr., two sisters, Opal Bath and Sarah Struthers and two brothers, Bill and Cub Andrews.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home at Weir, with Pastor Sandy D. Stallings officiating.
Burial will follow in the Hosey Hill Cemetery at Weir.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where friends may call after noon on Friday.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 104 W. Main St. Weir.
