John Edward Hosterman was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and lived on the Northwest Arm with his parents, Thomas Melville and Margaret (Doyle) Hosterman. He had two brothers, William Seamore and Walter Bertram Hosterman. He told his son, Raymond, when he walked to school he would "see Indians". These Indians were probably from the Mi'kmaq tribe. Sadly his mother died in 1881 after the birth of her third son, Walter. The family moved to Massachusetts between 1884 and 1889. His father, Thomas, remarried Helen (Perry) Chace on 23 Nov 1892 and they settled in Somerset, MA. She was affectionately known as Nellie. John and his brother, Walter were living in Providence by 1900. He worked as a tool and screwmaker. Unfortunately his brother, Thomas died in 1906 and his brother, Walter in 1908.
He married Mary Frances St. George on 27 May 1909 in Providence, RI. They had four children, John Edward, Walter David, Helen Matilda and Raymond Thomas. He worked as a jeweler for several years and eventually operated a dairy farm on Apponaug Road in Warwick. His wife's brothers, Frank and Edward St. George lived with the family and worked for him. By 1930 they were living in the Connecticut Avenue* house in Lincoln Park and he was delivering milk and continued in this business right up until his death in 1953.
