Louise Dorothee Marie Karoline Engel was born on August 1, 1853 in Lüssow, in the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (now within the province of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany). She was the third child of Johann FRIEDRICH Engel and CHRISTINA Elisabeth Dorothea Henrietta Möller. When Louise was just 13 years old, on January 23, 1867, her mother Christina passed away, likely due to complications from childbirth. With young children to care for, her father Friedrich quickly remarried - on July 5, 1867 - to Sophie Prieff (although he had no other children).

In 1870, Louise's two older sisters Maria and Sophia emigrated to the United States. They followed in the footsteps of their uncle Christoph Engel (younger brother of their father Friedrich), as well as another uncle Henry, an aunt Sophia and their grandmother Sophia Dorothea Schindler Engel - who were all living in Detroit since 1854.

Louise's turn happened the following year, in 1871. Louise traveled together with her sister Sophia's father-in-law Hans Joachim Becker and brother-in-law Joachim Becker (along with his wife Sophia and young son). The 5 of them departed from Hamburg on October 18 aboard the SS Thuringia, and arrived in New York City on November 2, before continuing west to Detroit.

On February 10, 1875, Louise's sister Maria passed away due to complications from childbirth. Louise quickly married her widowed husband Berthold Mueller (sometimes known as "Miller") - not even 6 weeks later, on March 21st. This quick marriage seems to indicate that there was at least 1 young child from her sister's marriage that needed a mother's care.

It is well known that Louise and Berthold had no living children - so if there was a child from her older sister's marriage to Berthold, it must have died in infancy. The 1900 and 1910 censuses indicates that Louise had borne 4 children, although none of them were still living. Oral family stories say that Louise and Berthold wanted a child so much that they offered to adopt their grand niece Elsie Vierk (granddaughter of older sister Sophia). Although of limited economic means, the Vierks politely declined the offer (and went on to have 4 more children, for a total of 8).

Louise's only other living siblings - Wilhelmina Engel (born in 1859) and August Engel (born in 1866) - immigrated to the United States in 1881 and 1890 respectively, after the death of their father.

Louise and Berthold Mueller lived on 17th Street in Detroit for a few years, and later moved to 4326 Toledo Avenue (also in Detroit). Louise passed away in 1922 from an apparent stroke - she was 68 years old. Husband Berthold passed away the following year at the age of 73.
