August Karl Friedrich Engel was born on December 16, 1866 in Lussow, in the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (now within the province of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany). He was the youngest child of Johann FRIEDRICH Engel & CHRISTINA Elisabeth Dorothea Henriette Möller. When he was born, his mother was 45, and his father was 49 years old. August's mother died about 5 weeks after he was born, on January 23, 1867. His father remarried to Sophie Prieff shortly thereafter, and August was raised by his step mother.

August's 3 oldest siblings - Mary, Sophia and Louise - all emigrated to the United States in 1870-1871, although Mary died in 1875 due to childbirth. Sister Wilhelmina emigrated to the United States in 1881, while another brother Ludwig died in infancy in Mecklenburg.

In 1890 (about 9 years after the death of his father), August followed his sisters to the United States, arriving in Ellis Island on April 19, 1890. He traveled on to Michigan where Sophia, Louise and Wilhelmine were living with their families.

On October 23, 1893, August married Bertha M. Finner in the village of Taylor Center, Michigan. Bertha was the daughter of local farmers Herman A. Finner and Henrietta Porath (see attached marriage record). August and Bertha went on to have 8 children:

1895 - Caroline F.
1896 - Wilhelm Louis Karl (died age 4 years)
1898 - Elizabeth Auguste Friederika
1901 - John Carl Christian
1903 - Henry William John (died age 2 months)
1909 - August Carl Frederick
1917 - Norman Frank

The name of the 8th child (apparently born before 1900) is not known at this time - that child was likely stillborn. August worked for a time as a carpenter, but later took up farming and purchased a farm in rural Wayne County.

On June 21, 1941, August's wife Bertha passed away at Eloise Hospital (now known as Wayne County General Hospital in Westland). August lived another 16 years - he passed away in 1957. Both August and Bertha are buried in West Mound Cemetery in Taylor, Michigan.
