SCRUGGS WALTER Died Sunday, May 15, 2011, in Boynton Beach, Florida. He was a resident of St. Clair Shores. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 18, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. in Kaul Funeral Home, 28433 Jefferson Avenue, St. Clair Shores, Michigan.

He is survived by his cherished wife of 39 years, Kathy; two adored children, Karyn (Michael) Teadt of Maumee, Ohio and Glynn (Lynn) Scruggs of Belleville, Michigan, as well as four dearly loved grandchildren, Morgan and Marlee Teadt and Chadd and Jorri Scruggs; a beloved brother, Jack (Bonnie) of Willisburg, Kentucky and many nieces and nephews. His parents were Richard B and Minnie (Colvin) also of Willisburg.

Walter was drafted in the Army during the waning days of WWII, while attending college. After his military service he continued his education and became an instructor for the Florida Military Academy in St. Petersburg, Florida. In addition to Campbellsville College, Walter attended the University of Kentucky, the University of Tampa, and took classes at the University of Detroit and Wayne State in law and police administration. Walter moved to Michigan in the early 1950's. He joined the Detroit Police Department and completed his training in 1952. He retired in 1977 with the rank of Detective Sergeant. A private pilot, he and other officer pilots became the police department's "eye in the sky" during the 1967 riots and he helped evaluate the feasibility of starting a police aviation unit. He spent many years with the police department's Cobo Hall unit and with the police unit at the Office of Corporate Counsel.

After his retirement, Walter became a licensed General Contractor and operated his own company, Scruggs Contracting, until August, 2010. Before establishing a more commercial and industrial base, he built custom homes in the Grosse Pointes, Birmingham, West Bloomfield and the Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti area. Walter was a Shriner in the Valley of Detroit, a member of the Quite Birdmen, a lifetime member of the DAV and other fraternal and professional organizations. He also supported many charitable organizations. He was a 'charter member' of the 'Early Morning Masochist Club', so dubbed because of their gathering at about 4 a.m. in the morning to exercise at the old YMCA in downtown Detroit. This informal group formed a bond which lasts until this day. He was an avid traveler and had visited every Continent. He savored the various cultures and loved meeting new people. Walter seldom met anyone with whom he could not find common ground. He had a great sense of adventure and often said that if they ever build a road to the moon, he'd be the first on it. He was a very good cook, loved trying new recipes and restaurants and native dishes when traveling. He enjoyed planning parties for family and friends, and for many years hosted and annual Corn Roast for his fellow QB's. He also enjoyed the Detroit Boat Races, the Detroit Thanksgiving Day Parade, the National Championship Air Races in Reno, Nevada and the Indianapolis 500. He also followed the stock market. Walter was a loving husband, a great father, a good friend and a truly Christian man. He will be sorely missed by all whose lives he touched with his friendship, generosity, grace, kindness, humor and his wonderful smile.

A private interment is planned. Memorial contributions are suggested to the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan, 1169 Oak Valley Drive, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48108, to the Salvation Army Disaster Relief Fund.
