Mary Elizabeth Goates was the daughter of Phillip Goats and Margaret Nancy Turnborough. Both she and two of her sisters changed their surname to Goates. She was married to James Gilbert on September 30, 1857 in Lawrence, Tennessee ( Early Middle Tennessee Marriages Volume 1 Brides Page 208 - Lawrence County ). Her sister, Martha Jane Goates, married the brother of her husband, Thomas Jefferson Gilbert.

Mary and James had three children:
John Wesley Gilbert, b. 05/10/1862
Louisa Jane Gilbert Danley, b. 06/20/1865
James Phillip Gilbert, b. 11/18/1875
Mary died in childbirth on November 18, 1875 giving birth to her son, James Phillip Gilbert.

After her death, her husband, James Gilbert, remarried to Rhoda Emeline Stewart on 03/05/1878 in Lawrence, Tennessee.
