He was a committed member of the Church of Christ. He served as an elder in the church for some years. Even into his 90s he visited the sick and the "old folks" with the minister.
Prior to marriage, he worked on ranches. After retiring from the Santa Fe Railroad at 65, he worked in his yard and garden several hours each day--other than during the coldest part of the winter or during rain. Between Johnnie and God, it was truly a garden showplace.
He served his country in World War I and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
