As the story was told by Cora Mae Randles Avery
Mary's mother had passed away when she was just 16 or 17 and when her father remarried the story goes that she did not like the new wife. Mary was working with for a family, He was a doctor and was moving to Independence, Montgomery County Kansas. Mary went with them. { Independence is in the bottom right hand corner of Kansas}. After a few years they went home and she moved on to Hutchinson, and worked as a maid at one of the Hotels in town. There she met James and the story goes on. With her leaving home so early she did not know a lot about her family. As far as we know she only saw a few family members once after leaving home.
