ENFIELD - Agatha "Peggy" (Stanhope) Hanscom, 99, died March 9, 2012. She was born Jan. 25, 1913, in South Lincoln, to Wesley and Millicent Stanhope. Peggy attended schools in Old Town and Bangor, and graduated from Bangor High School. She was postmaster in Enfield for 23 years retiring in October 1992, shortly before her 80th birthday. The post office was located in her home and townspeople enjoyed coming to get their mail and smelling the wonderful aromas of whatever Peggy was cooking on that particular day or listening to her playing her baby grand piano for a few minutes before ringing the bell to alert her of their presence. Peggy liked to travel and, aside from attending postmaster's conventions all over the U.S. and Puerto Rico, she was able to enjoy trips to the Caribbean, Bermuda, Hawaii - twice, Alaska, Germany, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, the Fiji Islands, Canada and even Disney World, Florida. Peggy played piano and directed the junior choir at Enfield Baptist Church for many years. Her church was very important to her. She was a member of Enfield Elders and participated in the many activities of that group. She also enjoyed the Friday card group and had many lively games of Hand and Foot, playing even as her sight began to fail her. She was the proud recipient of the Boston Post Cane given her by the town of Enfield.

Peggy was predeceased by her husband, Cleve Alonzo Hanscom; a brother, Richard Stanhope; and a son-in-law, Warren Randall.

She is survived by two daughters, Greta Randall of Orono and Loreli Jenkins and her husband, George, of Enfield; five grandchildren, Grayson Randall and his wife, Mary Ellen, of Cary, N.C., Susan Coffin and her husband, Richard, of Bangor, Scott Randall and his wife, Karen, of Dixmont, Eric Jenkins of Westbrook and Jennifer Olander and her husband, Christopher, of Bristol, Conn.; seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, with two more on the way. Interment at Enfield Cemetery (Bangor Daily News 3/10/ & 4/24/2012)
