Johan Jacob brought his family to the United States, arriving in New York aboard the S.S. Suevia on June 17, 1886. When Anna Maria died May 14, 1909, Johan remarried on November 8, 1909 to Katherine (Bickert) Mohn.
Johan was a Mennonite Brethren minister in Brunnental Colony, Samara Province, Russia, and when he immigrated to Hastings, Nebraska, he helped found the Mennonite Brethren Church there. He was its presiding minister for many years.
