Johannes was born in Brunnental Colony in the Volga Region of Samara Province, Russia, the son of Johan Jacob and Anna Maria (Kindsvater) Brehm. He immigrated to the United States with his family June 17, 1886 aboard the S.S. Suevia. He married Catherine Elizabeth Ross on October 19, 1890. Only 2 of their 6 children survived into adulthood.
