Catherine was born in Norka Colony in the Volga Region of Saratov Province, Russia. She is the daughter of George and Anna Katharina (Koehler) Ross. She immigrated to the United States with her family aboard the S.S. Weiland on May 22, 1878. She married Johannes Brehm October 19, 1890. Only 2 of their 6 children survived into adulthood.

Death of Mrs. Brehm — Mrs. Catherine E. Brehm, aged 52, died at the home on East Second street at 7:45 p.m., Tuesday, after a lingering illness. She is survived by her husband, John Brehm, and two sons. The funeral was held from the Baptist church Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Buckner, the pastor, Rev. Richardson being absent from the city.

NOTE: Her first name is spelled Kathrine on her stone, the only place that her name is spelled with a "K". Her immigration record, 1880 census and obituary list her as Catherine; 1885 census, Catrina; all other census records as "Katie". (She also has another sister named Katherine, nicknamed "Katja".)
