Obituary

John Schwindt, son of Martin and Katherine Elizabeth Lehl Schwindt, was born on July 5th, 1869 at Norka, Russia, and departed this life May 28, 1943, at his home near Utica, Kansas, age 73 years, 10 months and 23 days.

In May 1890 he came to America and after residing for a short time in Nebraska came to Kansas to make his home near Bison. In May 1893, he was married to Anna Elizabeth Scheuerman. They made their home in Bison and on their farm in Lone Star Township until the year 1924 when they moved to Trego County, where he resided until his death. While a boy he was baptized in the Lutheran faith and became a member of the German Baptist Church at Bison in May, 1903.

Mr. Schwindt was active in church work for many years and to him the scripture was always a guiding, vital force directing his way through life. He often quoted scriptural passages in conversation and it was this trust and faith that sustained him as a devoted husband and father his entire life. Although he had been in failing health for the past few months, he was uncomplaining and preferred to do his daily tasks as always.

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife and faithful companion for fifty years, nine children, including eight daughters, Mrs. Sarah Baker and Mrs. Martha Bernbeck of Utica, Mrs. Ella Yost and Mrs. Ethel Duncan of Sterling Colo., Mrs. Clara Foos of Gova, Kan., Mrs. Nima Mellick of LaCrosse, Mrs. Hannah Auston, of Alexander, Minnie of Detroit, Mich., and one son, Ben, of Utica. One daughter, Anna Elizabeth, preceded him in death. He also leaves twenty eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Christina Spadi of Denver, Colo., two brothers, Henry, of Ft. Morgan, Colorado, and Martin, of Denver.

Funeral services were held at the LaCrosse Christian Church, Tuesday, June 1st, and Rev. D. A. Crist, of Quinter, was in charge. Burial was made in the LaCrosse Cemetery.

--------Martin Schwindt Family Tree---------
JOHN SCHWINDT
John Schwindt was the second oldest child of Martin Schwindt and Katherine Elizabeth Lehl, in a family of four boys and three girls. Like all of his brothers and sisters he was born in Norka, Russia. As a young man of twenty-one, he came to the U.S.A. in 1890.

He was about to be called into the military service of the Russian Army. To avoid this, he fled to Germany to get passage to the U.S.A. He and several others had been hiding out with a Jewish family; for a price. When the Jewish family demanded more money, he and four companions escaped and headed for the boat.

He finally made it across, and after a brief stay with friends and relatives in Nebraska, he settled in Rush Co. Kansas. In 1893 he was united in marriage to Anna Elizabeth Scheuerman whose parents had come to this country as early as 1875.

To this marriage were born nine girls and one boy. John pursued farming as a livelihood, and all the older girls shared the hard labor involved; they tended the horses and manned the plows, and assisted in the harvest.

John passed away at the age of 74, but his wife lived to the ripe old age of 93 years, 5 months.

Both were laid to rest in LaCrosse Cemetery.
