Henry was the oldest son of Martin Schwindt and Katherine Elizabeth Lehl, in a family of four boys and three girls. His father died at the early age of 41 and left his Mother with the burden of caring for a family of seven children ranging in age from one to sixteen years. Henry, with the help of his Mother had to assume a man's responsibility in caring for the yournger children.

During the summer months he farmed, sowed the crops in the spring and harvested them in the fall. In the winter he plied the butcher's trade, buying live animals and butchering them and selling the meat in the village. He was proficient in both the German and Russian languages, written and spoken.

About 1889 he was married to Katherine Schreiner. This marriage was blessed with eight children; seven boys and one girl. All of his brothers had come to the USA earlier; so in 1906 he also made the move. He arrived by way of New York, and came to Fairmont, Nebraska where many of his wife's relatives received them with open arms. After a short spell there, employed on the railroad, he moved his family to Denver, Colorado.

In the winter he worked in the repair shops of the railroad in Denver, but in summer he took the entire family to the beet fields in the surrounding area. In this way the entire family could contribute to the meager livelihood. In 1911 he and a brother-in-law returned to Norka, Russia to settle his estate and arrange to make his permanent home in the USA.

In 1914, after the boys were a little older, he purchased his own farm. The next twenty-five years or so were spent on the farm at Fort Morgan, Colorado. A broken hip eventually compelled him to retire from farming and move to a place in town. In 1950 the Mother passed away, and in 1952 he suffered a stroke from which he never recovered. He and his wife are both at rest in Riverside Cemetery at Fort Morgan, Colorado.
