85, of Gilbert, AZ passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on April 13, 2012. Philip was born in Snowflake, AZ on September 26, 1926. He was the 9th of 10 children born to Clarence & Esther Shumway. As a child he lived in Snowflake, AZ & Clifton, AZ. He graduated from Snowflake Academy at the age of 16 and went to Northern Arizona College where he joined the ROTC. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the Navy and served during World War II as a Radarman 3rd Class on the minesweeper USS Cowie DMS-39. They were sweeping mines off the shores of Japan at the time of the bombing of Hiroshima. During his time in the Navy he received three medals: the Asiatic Pacific Area (1 star), American Area, and the Victory Medal WWII. After an honorable discharge from the service he continued his education at Arizona State College (aka ASU) in Tempe, AZ. In 1951 he married Wanda Jo Shumway, his bride of 60 years. He is preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and 7 siblings. He leaves behind a sister, Beulah Petersen, a brother, Ardeth Shumway, and 8 children: Connie Robles, Phillip Jr., Marcus (Martie), Craig, Lenette O'Haver (Russ), Michelle Anderson (John), Janine Waldera (John), Jon (Denae), along with 2 more children they opened their home to: Linda Salterberg and Phyllis Muzzie. He has 40 grandchildren and 70 great-grandchildren. A public viewing will be held on Tuesday, April 17th from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at the Madera Ward of the LDS Church, 1150 W. Elliot Rd. in Gilbert, Arizona. The services will be held on Wednesday, April 18th from 9:00 - 10:00 am at the Madera Ward Chapel.
