Baron was the sixth child born to Jens Christian "Chris" Jensen Fonnesbeck and his second wife, Maria Kristine Skov Jorgensen. He grew up and attended schools in Logan, Utah.

Baron enlisted into the Army on May 25, 1942, in Los Angeles, California. He was a veteran of World War II. He married Thelma Hadfield of Smithfield, Utah, on January 10, 1942 in Yuma, Arizona. They lived a major portion of their lives in California.
