George Washington Anderson was born in Montgomery (Pulaski) County, Virginia, 1 Mar 1836, and died 20 Dec 1888 in Pope County, Illinois. He moved to southern Illinois with his parents when he was about thirteen years of age.
He married Elizabeth (Eliza) Bagley in Golconda, Illinois, 22 July 1858. She was born 1 Feb 1841 in Manchester, Dearborn County, Indiana, and also moved to Illinois as a child with her parents Walter Bagley and Lucy Canfield. Her ancestors were early settlers in the eastern counties of the United States.
Two years after George W. and Eliza were married he applied for land, 21 Dec 1860; eighty acres in the west half of SW and NW quarter of section 3, township 13, south range 6 east in Pope County, Illinois. The 1860 census listed him as the next farm to his father, John Anderson, in Rock town.
George W. served in the Union Army of the Civil War, enlisting, 12 Aug 1862, one year after his brother William. He was "twenty-six years of age and served three years in I. M. Raum's Golconda Company A, of the 120th Regiment of Volunteers." He was described as "five foot eleven inches tall, light complexioned, blue eyes and light hair." He was discharged with a certificate of disability on 14 April 1863 at Memphis, Tennessee after being in the hospital at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, Missouri for a month. "He was incapable of performing soldier duty because of Amanrosis, causing almost total blindness in the right eye, with chronic abscesses in the region of the left ear and mastoid cells." He later received a pension #70354 on 3 Sep 1866, but appeared in Pope County, Illinois court, 10 Sep 1868, stating he was denied a pension from the time of his discharge in 1863.
Eliza, age 48, applied for a widow's pension on February 1889 and received $12.00 a month for 14 years after George died. Eliza lived in the family home for fourteen years after George's death. She died of a stroke on 17 August 1902.
Eliza and George W. are buried in a row with some of their relatives in the old Palestine Presbyterian Church Cemetery outside Golconda, Illinois on the road to Eddyville, where they had attended church. George's tombstone is marked with "GAR", Grand Army of the Republic of the Civil War.
