Hilda Stock Stokes completed her life's journey on this Earth for a better place on March 31, 2012.
Hilda was born Dec. 12 1921, on the family ranch in Canebeds, Ariz., on the Arizona strip, to Isaac Edward Stock and Ella Perkins Stock. She was the second child of nine. Her father worked at a sawmill at Mount Trumbull, Ariz., in the Kiabob forest. The family mostly lived in St. George, Hurricane, La Verkin, or out at the ranch in Canebeds, Ariz. When Mom was 7 years old her father bought a 5-acre orchard in La Verkin. The family moved there the summer Mom was 9 years old. They then moved to the sawmill. These were the fondest memories of Mom's childhood.
She started school in Canebeds in a one-room county schoolhouse. In the second grade she went to school in La Verkin and went the rest of grade school there. She then attended high school at Hurricane High in Hurricane, Utah. When Mom was 18 she left home to work in Cedar City, Utah, against her parents' wishes.
While she lived in Cedar City she met John Preston Corry; they were married in 1941. From this marriage, Rodney Preston Corry and Joyce Corry were born. They were later divorced.
Mom moved to Logan, Utah, with the children. In 1950 she married R.T. Hendricks. They would have two children, Reene Thomas Hendricks and Anita Ann Hendricks, before R.T. Hendricks passed away in 1955.
Mom brought up her four children by herself, teaching us to be good, honest people. She was a mom who had to work very hard to support us as we were growing up. She always told us how she loved each of us so very much and how we were her world.
She went to work shortly after she was widowed; she first worked at Godfeirsons's in Caliente, Nev. We moved back to Logan and Mom worked at Low Cost Drug for 12 years. Then she worked at Franklin's Dress Shop in Las Vegas and last, Logan Knit, before retiring. After retiring she continued sewing, making beautiful clothing for her family and clients.
She married Francis Duncan Stokes on Dec. 13, 1983. They had a great marriage of 29 years. Francis took great care of Mom in her last years, as she could no longer take care of the both of them. We will always appreciate all Francis did for our mom.
Hilda is survived by her husband, Francis Duncan Stokes; her four children, Rodney Preston (Ann) Corry, Joyce Ricks (Dallas Ricks), Reene Thomas (Kathy) Hendricks and Anita Ann (Ed) Phelps; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Karen Kiger; one brother, Larmon Stock; and many nieces and nephews. We will miss you dearly, Mom.
Hilda was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Gilbert and Edward Stock; and four sisters, Eleanor Adams Smith, Reva Wyatt, Freda Williamson and Irene Williamson.
Mom wanted us to make sure all the nurses, aides and Hospice caregivers knew of her tremendous appreciation for all their kind care and help every day. She told us often how much you all meant to her and brought her so much happiness. We, Hilda's children, want to thank you so very much also. Your great help made it so much easier for us to be able to commute between our and Mom's home, as we all live outside of Cache Valley.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, at Allen-Hall Mortuary Chapel, 34 E. Center St. A viewing will be held prior to the funeral from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Interment will be in the Millville City Cemetery. Condolences and thoughts may be expressed to the family online at www.allenmortuaries.net.
