1924 Society Column: Rantoul News:
Mr. Cain was born near Tarbot, Kerry county, Ireland in 1827, coming to America when he was 17 years old. He settled at what is now LaSalle. He married Miss Jane Frawley March 25, 1856, after enduring the hardships of pioneer life for several years in Minnesota, they located and established a homestead, two and a half miles north of Gifford in Champaign county.
Mrs. Cain died on October 6, 1903, and since that time Mr. Cain has made his home with his children. For the past few years he has been living in Rantoul with his daughter, Miss Nellie Cain.
Family is Large: Whenever Mr. Cain chooses to celebrate a family anniversary there is always a houseful of relatives, without going any farther out of the family, than his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mr. Cain is the father of eight sons and three daughters; the grandfather of 58 grandchildren and the great grandfather of 40 great grandchildren.
In spite of this host of family responsibilities Mr. Cain is active, in good health and was able to go to town on the coldest and most disagreeable days during the winter. He is keenly interested in the political situation and has watched its progress in the United States with much interest during his 79 years of residence here.
Does Not Worry: About 15 years ago Mr. Cain was seriously ill. At that time he gave up smoking, and has kept his resolution faithfully since that time. Two years ago he had a cancer removed from his lip.
Mr. Cain is a devout Catholic and attends church regularly. He is of a generous disposition and glories in the fact that he is able to take care of himself. He attributes his long life to his freedom from worries and his ability to rough it.
With 97 years to his credit Mr. Cain to all outward appearances has every right to make claim to several more birthday anniversaries.
