James was the 2nd of ten children born to Eli and Ollie (Mullins) Vanover. He married Caroline Jane Baker, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Ragsdale) Baker, on August 1, 1872 at the age of 19 years.

In 1900, this family was living in Dickenson County, Virginia. They later moved to Wise County, Virginia. They are buried on Bold Camp, Wise County, Virginia. James Henderson died at the age of 84 years.

James and Caroline Jane had ten children:
1. Weddington D (b. 6/12/1881 d. 4/12/1902 20yrs., never married)
2. Sarah Dorothy (married William Powers)
3. Sarepta Ernestine (married Ephriam J. Gentry)
4. Ollie Frances (married Silas Patton Mullins)
5. Malvrie Mabel (married Daniel Bartley Hollyfield)
6. Elbert Monroe (married Cassie Ann Ritchie)
7. Robert Lemuel (married Molly Dotson)
8. Abby Gracie (married Luther Baker)
9. Malinda (b. 8/5/1877 d. 1885 8 yrs old)
10. John Bradford (b. 1/1879 d. 1879 6 weeks old)
