Dora was the 9th, of ten children born to Eli and Ollie (Mullins) Vanover. She married Samuel C. Meade, son of George W. and Mary (Hughes) Meade, on April 2, 1890 in Clintwood, Virginia.

Dora and Samuel had thirteen children:
1. Nettie (m. Elbert Robinson)
2. Rausie (m. James Rush Meade)
3. Alta (m. Edgar Whittaker)
4. Ethel (m. John Branham)
5. Maude (m. (1) Stewart Mullins, and (2) Dave Bray)
6. Grace (m. (1) Moscow Hibbits, and (2) Creed Mullins)
7. Ottis James (m. Daphne Stallard)
8. Bannie (m. Logan Keith)
9. Kedrick W. (m. (1) Irene Bates, (2) Ms. Kennedy, (3) Naomi Robinson, and (4) Shelby Collins)
10. Bruce (m. Ada Mullins)
11. Rena (m. William Albert Dotson)
12. George (m. Lillian Robinson)
