Owen Houtz Cluff was born to Oscar Lyons (1862-1894) and Eleanor Houtz Cluff (1870-1953). Owen had an older brother from this marriage, Oscar Burn Cluff (1888-1960).
When Owen was two years old, his father died of penumonia. A few years later his mother married Silas Franklin Drury. Two additional children were added by this marriage; Eleanor and Florence.
When Owen was 8 years old, his mother and stepfather bought a farm in Lake Point, Utah and moved their family there. Their land bordered the farm of Brigham Davies. Blanche Davies was one of his daughters. She and Owen grew up together as friends and eventually fell in love. They married on 30 October, 1917 in Farmington, Utah.
Owen was called to serve in the military as the United States entered WWI. Blanche gave birth to their first child, Eleanor Blanche "Nan" (1918-2007) while Owen was in France. After his return from the war, four additional children were added to the family; Afton Elizabeth Cluff (1920-Living), Owen Lavelle Cluff (1923-2010), Barbara Cluff (1926-Living) and LaRue Cluff (1928-2008).
When Owen returned from war service, his stepfather offered to share the farm and crops with his family. He eventually deeded part of the farm to Owen as a reward for his hard work.
Farming was something he loved to do... it was in his blood. He always made sure his parents received their full share of the harvest. Farming never made Owen a rich man, but he was always a good provider for his family and he always had a few dollars saved for a "rainy day".
He was always generous and caring of other people's burdens. If they ran out of hay for their cattle during winter months, he would share. He frequently loaned his farm machinery to neighbors or gave of his savings to those that needed help. Sometimes they repaid the loans with money or by working it off on his farm. But for some the loans were gifts that were never repaid.
Blanche died at the age of 68. At the time of her death, Owens health was also failing. He had been diagnosed earlier with cancer and had several surgeries and hospital stays. Owen followed Blanche's death just 373 days later on 19 July, 1965.
