Major William Edward McManimen, USAF (Retired)
CONCORD - Mr. McManimen, 80, of Concord, formerly of Charlotte, died Sunday, March 7, 2004, at University Hospital. He was born July 12, 1923, in Philadelphia, Pa., and was the son of the late Regina A. Mooney and William Edward McManimen. He married Shirley Rose Dew in Albany, Ga., on April 20, 1952. He served with the U.S. Air Force during World War II and in Korea, retiring with the rank of major. He moved to the Charlotte area from Cherry Hill, N.J., in 1977 and was associated with Hitchener Manufacturing Company as a sales engineer for 16 years. He was an avid flyer of P-47 Thunderbolts and F-86 Saber Jets while in the Air Force. His hobbies include golf, woodworking and gardening. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Shirley; children, Michael William McManimen of Charlotte, Kay McClelland and her husband, Mike, of Naperville, Ill., Steven Dew McManimen and his wife, Paula, of Harrisburg; sister, Eileen McManimen of Merchantville, N.J.; six grandchildren, Matthew, Scott and Kevin McClelland and Rachel, William and Laura McManimen. In addition to his parents, two sisters, Mary and Regina McManimen preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at Back Creek A.R. Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Wayne Frazier officiating.
Interment will be in Charlotte Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 9, 2004, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Lung Association of North Carolina, 5315 Greenbrook Drive Charlotte, N.C. 28205.
