Of Concord, NC, formerly of Charlotte, died peacefully Friday, April 10th, 2009, in her home at The Gardens of Taylor Glen. She was born April 22nd, 1927 in Albany, GA, the daughter of the late Elsie Travis and William Dew. She married William Edward McManimen in the chapel of Turner Air Force base, Albany, GA, on April 20th, 1952. Together they raised three children in Cherry Hill, NJ until moving to Charlotte, NC in 1977. She spent many years working in the Continuing Education Department of UNCC upon retiring in 1992. Her greatest joy was her family, especially her grandchildren, and the beach. She was incredibly compassionate, understanding, and always had a way of finding the best in people. Her strong faith in the Lord helped guide her through difficult times throughout her life. Survivors include her children, Michael William McManimen and wife Karen of Charlotte, NC; Kay McClelland of Harrisburg, NC; Steven Dew McManimen and wife Paula of Harrisburg; sister in law, Eileen McManimen of Lumberton, NJ; six grandchildren, Matthew, Scott and Kevin McClelland, Rachel, William and Laura McManimen. In addition to her parents, two sisters, one brother and her husband of 51 years preceded her in death. The family would like to thank the nursing staff of The Gardens of Taylor Glen for their loving and compassionate care given to Shirley for the last five years, especially Sonia, Dee, Michelle, Linda and Dr. Tignor. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association-Western Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.
