Mrs. Anna Elizabeth Stoppel

Mrs. Anna Elizabeth Stoppel, daughter of Christian Anschutz and wife nee Miller, was born on January 6, 1858, in Niedermonjou, a German colony along the Volga River, in Russia. Soon after birth she was baptized in the Lutheran church and thereby brought in the communion of the Triune God. At the age of 15 she renewed the baptismal covenant on the day of her confirmation in the same church.

On February 2, 1877, she was united in Holy Wedlock to Christian Stoppel. To this happy union eleven children were born, eight sons and three daughters, of whom two sons and two daughters preceeded [sic] her in death.

In 1890, she, together with her husband, imigrated [sic] to this country, arriving here on August 20th. They made their home on a farm near Wilson where she lived until 1930, and then moved to town. She had the honor of being a world war mother, having two sons in the army, and at present one grandson is serving in the armed Forces at Fort Riley Kansas.

On July 20, 1920, her husband preceded her in death, leaving her a lonely and sorrowed widow. Mrs. Stoppel was an upright citizen and a good mother, raising her children in a Christian manner. Having been one of the early settlers, she was one of the active members of the Lutheran church, having been one of the organizers of this congregation. She was one of those persons who never tire of doing good and was always willing to do her share for the upkeep of the church, at large and at home. After only ten days of illness caused by old age, she passed away last Wednesday morning, May 20, at one o'clock, attaining the age of 84 years, 4 months and 11 days.

She leaves to mourn her departure, six sons: Christ Stoppel, near Wilson; Alex Stoppel, of Lucas; Charles Stoppel, of Dorrance; Henry Stoppel, of Wilson; Edward Stoppel, of Bunker Hill; one daughter, Alvina Stoppel, of Dorrance; one sister, Mrs. Dora Morgenstern, of Fort Collins, Colorado, who stayed at her bedside until her end; four brothers: David Anschutz, of Wilson; Henry Anschutz of Lakin; Nicholas Anschutz, of Tulia, Texas; Alexander Anschutz, of Wilson; also 17 grandchildren, of whom one, namely Everett, son of Charles Stoppel, preceded her in death a few years ago; two great-grandchildren, as well as many relatives, and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held on Friday afternoon, May 22nd, 1942, from the Methodist church in Wilson, conducted by the Reverend W. J. Lind, of Daykin, Nebraska, her former pastor for many years. Pallbearers were the same as for her husband twenty-two years ago. Interment was made in the Wilson cemetery.

Card of Thanks

We are, indeed, grateful to all the neighbors, friends and relatives who by words and their kind deeds extended their sympathy at the time of our recent bereavement at the loss of our beloved mother.
