His early education was in the rural school near the family home close to Wilson. He also received his early Bible training there. He was baptized as an infant and at the age of 13 he renewed these vows with the rite of confirmation.

On June 23, 1918, he was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War I and after a few weeks of training sailed for London, England, and later to Cherbourg and Bordeaux, France. After the Armistice was signed on November 11, 1818, Charles was called back to Bordeaux, France, to serve in the military police division, returning to the United States on July 27, 1919, where he received his honorable discharge.

On May 20, 1920, he was married to Clara Anschutz at Wilson and this union was blessed with three children, Everett, Ralph and Marie. Everett died at the age of 16 and Ralph's death occurred at age 21. He retired in 1953 from active farming and moved to Dorrance, Russell, Kansas where he lived until 1969 before moving to Russell, Russell, Kansas to be near his daughter and grandchildren. On the 20th of May, 1982, they observed their 62nd wedding anniversary.

His entire life was filled with the many and varied activities of farming and even after his retirement he continued to be a good steward of the soil with his interest in the farm crops and his devotion to his gardening.
