Melvin LaVern Ehlers, son of Walter C. and Belva (Hill) Ehlers, was born October 29, 1935 at Hebron, Nebraska.

He passed from this life Sunday, March 18, 2012 at the Blue Valley Nursing Home in Hebron. He was baptized on May 12, 1937 in the Lutheran Church of Gilead. On April 23, 1950 he received his confirmation at Peace Lutheran Church, Deshler.

Melvin, known to many as Mel or Vernie, grew up in the Deshler community attending public schools and graduated from Deshler High School in 1954.

Early in life, Melvin was married to Sue Cox. To this union two daughters were born, LaVerna and Lisa.

He remarried on September 7, 1968 to Joann Brokaw Cox welcoming two step-daughters, Tami and Teri and in 1969 was blessed once again with another daughter, Traci.

Melvin served his country for 20 years in the United States Air Force as a military police officer both in the states and overseas. He retired in 1977. Following his service, he and his family returned to Hebron where he drove the bus for the Blue Rivers Area Agency on Aging of Thayer County.

In 1981 Melvin was hired as postman for the community of Hebron. He was a city mail carrier for 20 years, retiring on January 1, 2001.

Mel was a member of the Methodist Church and American Legion Post No. 180 of Hebron. He enjoyed being on the local bowling team and attending horse and car races.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Gene, Edward, Orrin, and infant Norman.

He will be forever remembered by his wife Joann of their home; daughters LaVerna McNamee, Lafayette, LA, Lisa Christensen and husband Kelly, Youngsville, LA, Traci Virus and husband Mark, Hebron, NE, Tami Cox, Fremont, NE, and Teri Estes and husband Dana, Devol, OK; 17 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; sisters Opal (Eldon) Johnson, Port Charlotte, FL, Vivian Schleif, Grand Island, NE and Louise Thurber, Edgar, NE; brothers Cecil (JoAnn) Ehlers, Las Vegas, NV and Wesley (Karol) Ehlers, Casa Grande, AZ; sisters-in-law Hope Ehlers, Webber, KS, Louise Ehlers, Plattsmouth, NE; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 23, 2012 at the United Methodist Church in Hebron, Nebraska with Pastor Mark Baldwin officiating. Following cremation inurnment will be in Hebron City Cemetery.

Military rites were provided by the Air Force Honor Guard of Offutt Air Force Base, Omaha. Memorials may be made to the Methodist Church building fund. These arrangements were entrusted to Price Funeral Home, Hebron, Nebraska.
